We fully support any type of environmental initiatives and power saving schemes. These new calculators from Microsoft are definitely a step in the right direction.
These calculators can determine the amount of power being used by desktops and servers and how these impact on the environment. Not only will they show your company’s carbon footprint, but they can also show you the type of savings that can be achieved through better IT power management and environmental awareness.
The calculators are focused on more of a business audience (for pretty obvious reasons) and they won’t give an accurate estimate for anything less than two machines.
You can plug into the calculators, variables such as: monitor type, OS, notebook/desktop, number of PCs etc, and they will return a value for power consumption and carbon emissions.
These are great tools and should be used by every business. I am still shocked by how many businesses are completely environmentally unaware. There are millions of offices that still leave all of their PCs on all night, for no reason at all. Come on, its time to start taking action on this.
