The secret has been revealed – There will be a Windows XP mode (XPM) for Windows 7.
XPM is built on the Microsoft Virtual PC 7 and will be available as a free download for Windows 7 professional, ultimate and enterprise users. XPM will include a full license of Windows XP with service pack 3.
XPM will work like any virtual PC product that you may already be familiar with, however, there will be one big advantage. XPM will not require you to run the virtual environment in a separate WIndows desktop. So for example, if you install a program for Windows XP, this will also appear in the Windows 7 start menu and you can run it from Windows 7 as you would any other program. Users can then run either Windows XP applications or Windows 7 applications all in the one desktop.
XPM is a big advantage for Microsoft because it allows users to run legacy XP applications, without the need for Windows 7 to have any old legacy coding.
By being able to run all of the XP applications as if it were a pure XP environment, this also makes the upgrade to Windows 7 an easier choice for consumers and corporate customers. Windows 7 will now offer the best of both worlds.
