There should be an easier way to migrate from Windows XP to Windows 7 with the Microsoft Deployment Tool 2010.

Unlike Windows Vista, XP cannot be directly upgraded to Windows 7 in the same way. But by using the MDT 2010, the solution should be much easier and all user settings for apps, desktop etc can be moved across.

The process works by saving user state with all settings, files etc and then re-installing Windows 7 on the top, with the disk being wiped beforehand. Microsoft call this hardlink migration.

This does make Windows 7 more appealing for XP users and a clean migration tool that actually works will make life easier for everyone. But always backup first…just in case.
