The mighty Google Gmail went down for approximately 2.5 hours. This was a pretty big crash that completely put Gmail out of service.

The downtime affected approximately 113 million users. I am sure there were a lot of unhappy users during this time. For most users it is no big deal, but for those running business using Gmail accounts it would have been more troublesome.

Just recently there was the Gmail security threat that allowed remote users to access email and last year the service crashed a couple of times, but nothing as serious as this.

The funniest part of the whole situation is that porn peddlers were quick to cash in on the Gmail downtime. What they did was create a Gmail group called “Gmail Down”. On this group they displayed naughty pics and videos with links to their membership sites. These porn guys are pretty smart and they don’t waste any time in capitalising on a situation.
