There has been some problems caused with a certain combination of Windows XP SP3 and IE8 RC1. This is kind of confusing and hard to explain, but i’ll give it a shot anyway as it might help you out.

OK, now the problems will occur if you have done the following: If you install SP3 on XP after having installed IE8 beta, then you will most likely experience some problems. If there is a problem, when you try to install IE8 RC1, you will receive a message along the lines of “Setup has detected that you’ve installed a new service pack for your OS, since installing IE8…….”.

So if you do install IE8 RC1 on top of SP3 that was integrated after the IE8 beta, then the OS will become locked in terms of IE updates and the service pack level. So you will no longer be able to download IE8 RC1 or XP SP3. Yeah, we know, its very very confusing.

Basically, here is the solution if you have the problematic setup and want to install IE8 RC1: First you should uninstall SP3, then uninstall IE8 beta. You can then reinstall SP3 and then install IE8 RC1 without trouble.

Is it even worth the hassle?
