Solid state drives have been gaining momentum, and for obvious reasons – less moving parts, lighter, less heat etc. It is estimated that in a few years these will be the standard in notebooks, which means smaller, lighter notebooks. Although, some of them cant really get any smaller!

Toshiba has been working hard on SSD technology and they will be revealing their 512GB solid state drive at the Consumer Electronics Show next month. This will be the largest solid state drive developed and is getting close to matching the size of regular mobile drives.

Toshibas solid state drives have a read speed of 240MBps and a write speed of 200MBps.

Mass production of these drives (512GB) should happen sometime early next year.  Toshiba sells a range of solid state drives, but the 512GB version will cost around $1500.

It will be interesting to see how fast the development of SSD progresses. I am pretty sure we will be seeing terabyte drives very soon and hopefully at affordable prices.
