Do you want to have some fun with your friends or family’s computer, here are a few tricks you can do that will annoy and mystify anyone.

I run a Vista machine so I know they work with Vista.. good luck!

1. Make the Desktop Disappear

This is one of my personal favorite pranks to pull on someone, it’s such an easy trick to do and will confuse the victim for hours.

  • You have to take a screen shot of the entire desktop
  • Save the image somewhere on the computer
  • Now set the screenshot of the desktop as the wallpaper
  • Now you have to hide the desktop icons
    • Right click on desktop
    • Click view
    • Uncheck show desktop icons
  • Now you have to hide the taskbar
    • Right click in the taskbar and click properties
    • Go to the taskbar tab
    • Check auto-hide the taskbar
    • Click apply and OK
  • So now we have what looks like a perfect desktop, but nothing works. Trust me, this one will drive them nuts, they will be clicking everywhere not having a clue what is going on.

2. Inverse the Screen

You can rotate a screen completely by 90, 180 or 270 degrees, this can be so annoying to undo as the mouse also changes direction so you pretty much have to put your computer upside down to fix. To rotate your screen do this;

  • Right click your desktop
  • Select graphic options
  • Select rotation
  • Select how far you want to rotate (180 degrees is always fun)
  • Done

3. Fun With the Mouse Settings

You can fiddle around with some mouse setting so that any user will be pulling out their hair trying to get it back to normal, here is some of them;

Swap the Mouse buttons

  • Right click your desktop
  • Click personalize
  • Select mouse pointers
  • Click the buttons tab
  • In the button configuration area select left handed
  • This will make the right hand button on your mouse the primary button

Double click speed

  • Go to the buttons tab in the mouse properties area
  • In the double click speed area move the bar to the right (fast)
  • The user will then have to double click at the speed of light to make anything happen

Mouse wheel scrolling

  • In the mouse properties area select the wheel tab
  • Go to the vertical scrolling area
  • Change the number of lines to the max (100)
  • Now every time they scroll the mouse it will go at the speed of light

Other mouse settings

  • Go through the mouse properties area, you will find some other annoying settings

4. Sound Setting Scenarios

You can always have fun with sound and the user will have no idea what is going on, they will think they are going nuts!

Logon/Logoff Sound

  • We all know the sound the normal logon/logoff makes, so lets change them
  • Go to personalize and click sounds
  • Click the sounds tab
  • In the programs box scroll down to windows logoff and windows logon
  • Click one
  • Go to sounds and change it to whatever sounds awful (you can test it)
  • Apply and done

Other Sounds

  • In the sounds setting tab try changing other sounds
  • If you change every program your user will think they have some crazy virus

5. Make Your Own Error Messages

You can make your own error message and make the victim think they have broken their computer by watching too much porn. It’s very easy to do, just follow this;

  • Open notepad up and post this into it
    • X = MsgBox(“Hello World”, ,”My Message”)
  • Save this file as something .vbs
  • Open up the file and you will see an error message pop up

  • Now you can edit the file again to make any message you want, this is my personal favorite;
    • X = MsgBox(“Windows Vista Erasing – You Watched Too Much Porn”, ,”Your Computer Is Corrupted”)
    • This will come up as this nice error message

  • Now all you need to do is to save it to the users desktop and make it look like a popular icon (word, excel, IE, etc)
    • Save the .vbs with whatever error message you want
    • Right click on the file and select send to desktop (shortcut)
    • On the icon on the desktop change the name to their favorite program, application or file
    • Now you have to change the icon associated with this shortcut
    • Right click on the icon and select properties
    • Now click change icon
    • Select the icon that is the same as their favorite program

Now whenever the victim tries to open their favorite program they think their computer will be busted from an excess of watching porn, it’s a classic to watch! Our personal favorite is to swap the shortcut with an IE icon so every time they try to browse the web they get the message.

Just mess around with all these settings and other you can find and your victim will be trying to fix their computer for hours (they probably won’t even get past prank 1).  You have to watch them attempting to fix the combination of pranks 2 and 3 together, its hilarious!
