We often get emails asking “what does PC optimization mean” or  “what is the best way to optimize my PC”. Most of the general computer users are not really aware of how to optimize their PC or what it even means.

Basically PC optimization is just getting the most out of your computer with some tweaks and proper maintenance. Alot also depends on the current performance of your PC. If it is running really slow, then you will need to quite a bit more to get it back into shape, or it might be moving along nicely, but you want to get rid of some extra (unused) features to gain performance instead.

Whatever your goals might be with optimization, you should always maintain your computer and never let it get to the stage where errors build up and your computer becomes completely bogged down with garbage.

Over time the Windows Registry gets filled with invalid keys, corrupt keys, empty keys and this all creates extra work for your processor and more errors overall. As you add and remove software, add drivers, remove viruses/malware, this all leaves behind remnant entries and further clutter. As you can imagine, the only thing that can happen is for your PC to slow down and possibly crash or freeze.

You can either maintain your PC with a third party registry repair tool, or you can do the work manually. We don’t recommend touching the registry though, unless you really know what you are doing. One wrong edit to the registry can leave your system completely unusable.

Your best bet is to try out a third party registry repair tool. These will scan your computer and registry for errors and then perform the appropriate fixes.  You can gain some very nice performance improvements and the reduced errors and instability will also save alot of time. In the next few posts, we will look at some optimization tweaks for XP and Vista.
