You have probably already received a .docx document from a friend, client or work colleague that is already using Word 2007 and you probably wondered what the hell it was.
If you try to open .docx in earlier versions of Word you wont like what you see. Unfortunately they are not backwards compatible. So if you receive a .docx and don’t have Word 2007, it will not work. You can however send an earlier .doc to users of Word 2007 and they will not have a problem.
Well the good news is there is a plugin available for earlier versions of Word that allow .docx files to work. Once installed, there is generally not many issues with opening .docx files. So there is no need to worry now if not everyone in your office is using the latest version of Office.
The download is called the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack and it works for Word, Excel and PowerPoint file formats. Once installed it can automatically detect formats and will open them with the correct program.
