Virtual Desktops for Windows

You may have heard of multiple desktops or you might be familiar with using multiple desktops in Linux. This is a really cool feature that serves some very practical purposes as well as looking cool.

Probably the best use of multiple desktops is keeping everything organized and reducing clutter. With each desktop you can have different icons, different applications etc. One example of its usefulness is for web developers. One desktop might be devoted to design, with Photoshop and all the related design applications and files open. The next desktop might be for the coding side, with Dreamweaver and other related apps, maybe FTP for uploading. Then its just a matter of switching between desktops to work on a different part of a project. This is alot easier than having tons of files and applications all on the one screen.

Multiple desktops is not native to Windows, but the good news is that it is possible. There are a few decent programs out there that will allow for fully functionining multiple desktops. There are free and paid options, and Microsoft has even released their own free version.

Below are some of the options you can test out. The features do vary, but all of these will do an adequate job in providing the benefits of multiple desktops.

Microsoft Desktops

This is a free application from Microsoft that allows you to run upto 4 different desktops. This is a really lightweight application and because of the way it works, it is pretty much bug free. Here is a quick summary:

Desktops uses a Windows desktop object for each desktop. Application windows are bound to a desktop object when they are created, so Windows maintains the connection between windows and desktops and knows which ones to show when you switch a desktop.

This version does lack some features found elsewhere, but the speed and lack of bugs is quite a good thing. Try it out from the link below:

This is another really cool virtual desktop application. Dexpot will allow you to run upto 20 virtual desktops at once.

This has quite a few features, with Settings management, Windows catalogue, full screen preview, configure desktops with many independent features, set desktop rules, preview each desktop and much more.

Overall a very nice product with lots of cool features, enough to satisfy most users. There is a lot of customization to test out. You can download this from the link below:
