Change Browser User Agent String

OK, if you don't know what the user agent is, then its most likely that you don't want to change it. But here is some further information about it.

Your browser has a user agent value. This is a string value which tells the type/version of browser you are using. When you visit websites, they may use your user agent value to do certain things. They might deliver content based on your browser, or just record browser specific stats etc. Anyway, there are a few reasons why you might want to change this, but I will leave that to your imagination. Lets just look at how its done!

Note: to do this you will need to edit the registry. You do this via regedit. eg: Start -> run, then type regedit

Change Internet Explorer 6 User Agent

Browse to the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent

There should be a key called "Version". Just change the value in that key to whatever you want your user agent to be. If there is no "Version" key, then you will need to create one.

To create the key, just select New->String Value. Call it "Version". Then enter the value you wish to show up for your user agent.

Note: by changing the user agent in IE, it can affect web pages and Windows Update. Some things may stop working.

Change Mozilla Firefox User Agent

Open up the browser and in the address bar type in: about:config

In the filter box type the following: general.useragent.extra.firefox

Doubleclick that value and change it to whatever you like.
